| definatly need to pull a vacuum to remove air and can also help determine if there are any large leaks. If it pulls a good vacuum and will hold it then the system has no large leaks, although some leaks will hold vacuum but leak under pressure.
Would recommend having someone with experience look at it and perform the repairs with your freon. Also have them add leak dye to pinpoint any leaks it may develop.
