Cran-G, The system should really have a vacuum pump attached for about 1 hr to remove any air and moisture in the system. Also you need to know if the system can be charged with liquid(can upside down, quick fill) or needs to be fed only vapor (can upright in a bucket of warm water) Feeding liquid into a vapor system is a quick way to destroy the compressor. Another question is there enough oil is left in the system ? any dirty oily spots on hoses or connections that would indicate leaked oil ? To be safe, you should have a set of AC gauges hooked up and someone with experience with AC work helping you. An alternative is that most auto parts stores will have AC "how to do" books and relatively cheap AC tools to set you up to do your own AC work from now on for cheap. :-)
