Subject: Wild Oats . . .

Agent Orange: Friendly fire that keeps on burning.

were always the curse here. They caused major problems and as you say; Fargo is Fargo. Never killed them all and what it didn't kill, ensured that M would sell more Fargo. I did grit my teeth one year and absolutely refuse to put any seed in the ground until I had killed two flushes. That really thinned the seed bank, but it was only about a 6 year solution and they were starting to come back.

Then they gave us Discover. The stuff just flat smokes 'em - kills 'em dead. I've sprayed them when the fulsh only has 3 leaves and sprayed major infestations when they are about to head out. They turn blue and die. although the label recommends 40 acres / box and 10 gals. of water / acre, I've been loading up my NoDak Cessna with 210 gals of water and a box of Discover and covering 70 acres. I didn't spray any Discover this year because Wane and I walked the fields and couldn't find an oat. They seem to have gone extinct on the farm. I don't miss them either.

I'm sure that you have the same chem rep that makes the rounds to the meetings here also. North Dakota experiment station at Williston conducted a trial of 100% no-till some years back. No tillage of any kind was allowed for a period of 10 years. They'd have gone longer, but the foxtail got so bad it forced them to break out the tillage tools. Seemed to have made an impression on the chem rep though. He figured there is about a 15 minute window when RU will kill foxtail and after the window closes RU has no effect on the plant. He has the look of a truly beaten man when someone asks about foxtail, at one of his meetings.
