Subject: RE: Straight cutting cereal crops

E Manitoba
A flex head is not the best for straight cutting I think the JD head can be bolted rigid to make a passable job. Here in Manitoba we can dessicate wheat with roundup, not sure about oats and barley. If the crop is weedy or uneven ripening roundup works well ,apply 7-14 days before anticipated harvest date when grain is 30% moisture, do not use grain for seed.
We've never had wheat come off dry when straight cutting usually 2-4% above. Aeration bins will dry it down ,depends on your climate. I prefer swathing but if it's a wet harvest we let the wheat stand and straight cut. We've tried oats but if they're ripe header losses seemed high, if we cut earlier green kernels are a problem.
Straight cutting is easier on the combine, very smooth feeding.
