from a development and support standpoint, it would have the potential to be a nightmare, unless the software manufacturer restricted the laptop/tablet platform to one or two specific models, and said "if you're running ANY software on the PC other that our own software, we won't support you". Not to mention needing to find a laptop/tablet that is rugged enough to run day-in and day-out in the cab of a vibrating, dusty, hot/cold, humid/dry vehicle. There are some out there, for sure, but they're expensive.

Unlocks could be made specific to a customer instead of specific to a display; that's a separate issue from having a proprietary monitor vs a "regular" laptop/tablet. It would require assigning a customer an id or key, which would be used to generate the unlocks, instead of using the display serial number.

mx270a is a frequent contributor here and has developed a system very similar to what you're describing; he hasn't released the autosteer code, but other parts are functional and available for download if you're interested:
