It's a mystery as (surprisingly) all USB cables have fitted in the same sockets since they first became the norm.
The data handling ability has increased from USB1 to USB2 and now USB3 on the latest, but they still should interchange.
Unless it's a serial plug on your lead, or something is blocking the socket, just possible especially on a laptop.
