Subject: RE: Peas or Clover to make N after winter wheat?

Gettysburg, PA

Do you want this legume to winter kill?  Here, we've had little luck with austrian winter peas.  Although they are somewhat winter hearty, I've not seen them consistently overwinter and when they do it's been really spotty.  I like the clovers: red and crimson.  They overwinter well and you have something growing in the spring to help dry fields.  I haven't done any studies in our county (we let that to PSU), but, they've seen N results anywhere form 40 - 80 lbs depending on how long you let it grow in the spring.  I still like the muliple species mixes!  They seem to always do well.  Let me rephrase that: at least something in the mix does well, most times several things grow well.   Edit to add: We are at the northern limits of crimson clover for winter hardy, I think you are too far north to use it unless you want it to winter kill.
