cropsey, il 61731 | Usually I cover most of my ground going to corn with hog manure, but our cnmp plan called for a higher rate and I really needed to do a little buildup anyway. That leaves 160 acres to side dress ammonia or something else.
I thought about ESN since it is slow release N, but my fertilizer guy said it floats and if it isn't worked in right away, it floats away with the next rain - sort of the opposite of 28% where a rain washes it into the soil nicely. They were recommending urea with agrotain and make sure I use some 28% with my preplant since urea is a little tricky to get on evenly. Since I planned on 20 gallons/acre of 28% anyway to allow me more time to side dress, it will work.
Turns out the urea is about 7 cents/lb N more than NH3 and I don't have to side dress, knock over corn, deal with tanks, etc. It looks like a good idea if it works. The plan for us would be to work it in soon after application.
I read some earlier posts stating 'it didn't work' - was there a particular reason urea is a bad idea?
thanks,
Pat
