NE CO | I use a Flexicoil 5000 with 9" spacing with Stealth type openers and use it in the spring to seed Proso millet into corn stalks. As JohnW says, ideally, the residue should be sized to fit between the shanks. In my case, I grow 50-60 bu/ac corn in an average year so that helps my situation. When I use an old CIH corn header with knife rollers, I can usually seed through the corn stubble. With a JD head with stalk rollers, it is more unlikely that I can get through the stubble without lots of plugging problems. This year the tumbleweeds also blew into the cornstalks over the winter, and I am having problems on the stalks harvested with the JD header in spite of the fact that the corn only made about 30 bu/ac last year. If I could justify the extra expense, I would own a disk style opener drill for proso into cornstalks, and a hoe opener for seeding wheat in the fall. In the meantime, I fight the hoe opener in cornstalks. Pasturing the cornstalks helps the situation as well if you are willing to deal with the problems of running cattle on the ground. | |
