Subject: Hoe drill stubble length...

The general rule for air hoe drills is that the crop residue should be no longer than the distance between openers. So in corn stalks or stubble I would guess that you would have to size all the stubble with either a chopper head on the combine or use a flail chopper after harvest to grind up the stalks. Most US and Canadian users of hoe drill do not grow corn so this is a situation that usually does not come up. Horsch in Germany is an advocate of using hoe type openers and would be a good source of information for you. Send Micheal Horsch an email and see what he says. He is quite a speaker in either Deutsch or English. Horsch is also in the US as partner with Kevin Anderson in South Dakota and they make hoe type air seeders and hoe type seed openers. Horsch seeders also use the Anderson openers.
