Get to the North Mixmaster where I-35 meets I-80 and I-235. Take I-235 into town, goes south then swings west. Get off at Martin Luther King Boulevard, go south. Just after it swings east get on Fleur. Go south on Fleur to the air port. That's several miles shorter, not necessarily quicker because there are numerous stoplights on MLK and Fleur.

From Waterloo, west on 20 to I-35 works good, but south on 63 to 30, west on 30 to just past Marshaltown and SW on 330 changing to 65 makes use of one of the rare diagonal roads in Iowa. Or SW from CF to get to IA 14 then down to the Albion road north of the Marshaltown airport. That road turns south and meets 330 SW of Marshaltown. Get thee a road map and pick any route of of Waterloo between going south and going west and when you get to I-80 go west to Des Moines, or when you get to I-35 going west go south to Des Moines. You can't miss it.
