I was told to remove the anode rod out of my water heater when I put it in. It's been out for probably at least 20 yrs now and still working fine. Also, my water softener removes all our iron and I can tell you our iron is very high. We just use regular salt in it and it works great. You need to work with a knowledgeable softener company to get one that will work.
