Subject: RE: Get more opinions

central - east central Minnesota -

Southern Farmer - 12/6/2010 12:18 FWIW. As an ex-cancer patient, I can remember the Doctors words crystal clear after 28 years. He said "most cancers are curable if we can get to them soon enough, but most people continue to go to their local doctors until it gets completely out of control and then they send the patient to a cancer center and they die here." Your recomendation to "GET ANOTHER OPINION" should include recomending that the opinion come from someone that works with macular degeneration on a daily basis. He will be aware of all the recent treatments and experiments that are ongoing. Best of luck to the man.

How very true and very unfortunate!  Get to the people that speicialize in the ailment. As mentioned, the Mayo has all the resources in one place to get a handle on the issue. No jacking around for weeks or months - they schedule you in and keep you there for 2 or more days to anylize and come up with a treatment program.

I know of a handfull of patiants that jacked around with locals family DR or NP's and worsened their condition . . . they all lived, but if they would have been more aggressive with their anylization and dr's it would have been faster recovery, less invasive and less money.
