| CN here ( and likely other RR's), allow the engine crew to come to a stop and wait for replacements even after a "near miss" at a grade crossing. A heart-stopping "what-if" incident un-nerves you enough to deserve the rest of the day off.
Engineers are trained to execute a "fast stop" when travelling at speed and encountering that situatio, and a collision is unavoidable. Slamming the brakes on full can easily result in a derailment, which can harm much more people either onboard an Amtrak train or the surronding countryside with a hazardous goods or tank car train. | |
