Ubuntu has a problem with the wireless cards in many laptops. I've found my Compaq laptop wireless card doesn't work with Ubuntu 10.10 or a number of earlier iterations. However I have an inexpensive Belkin USB plugin wireless device and Ubuntu works fine with that.
Free or low cost safe browsing idea
