Train crews we have dealt with in our area have described emergency stops, as the train is ruined if not derailed by useing it. Given that and the fact that collision is going to happen anyway most in our area use fast stop that still takes about 1/2 mile. Crews are removed for testing and recovery. Even knowing it's not their fault, it can still mess you up.
OUCH!!! Bet the Train Driver needed new shorts!
