Subject: Engagement ring prices

My son revealed over the weekend that he has been shopping for an engagement ring/bridal set and I was shocked at the prices he was quoting.  I figured with gold sky high anything decent would be out of sight.  It's the opposite.

I actually looked at the Zales website and, for example, a 1/2 set with 14 carat gold is like $600.  .  Heck, I paid more then that for my wife's set 27 years ago. One carat sets for $1,400. He said one jeweler told him diamonds are depressed right now, which doesn't really make sense with the way metals are trading.

Nobody gets married anymore so rings are hard to sell? I don't know, I'm stumped.

Well, it kinda makes sense to me. When the economy is slow and everybody is afraid of being laid off the first thing most reasonable people quit spending money on is luxury items. Jewelery, RVs, atvs, boats etc. Local Honda atv store closed up a couple weeks ago. Went from selling hundreds of bikes per year to hardly any.

Diamonds are in the situation of a significant oversupply. They'd be even much cheaper than they are except for the attempted induced shortage. The price was artificially high caused by a monopoly limiting supply for many years. Due to the way things are now, they are not as effective as they once were.

It's still overpriced from any realistic value but there you go.

and BHP Billiton. Perhaps diamonds will soon be cheaper than Potash.

By the way--anyone want a Rock Potassium engagement ring? Just one word of warning-you can't let your princess wash dishes or it will dissolve.

The price of the stone depends on cut, color, carat, and quality. A big diamond doesn't necessarily mean a great diamond or an expensive diamond. Before he makes a decision he should do some DD and study up on the factors affecting the value of the stone. There are some excellent books available to get. One detailed book would be a very good investment to make. The thickness of the band is important as well, a thinner band will wear out or break faster. As for the mount, the metal it is made of will matter too. And how it holds the stone matters too.

Went to our jewelers, he said the same thing, they keep digging diamonds, but nobody is buying. But 1400 buys you a very poor quality 1 carat diamond. You probably bought your wife a good quality diamond anyway. Looks like nice, certified 1 carat diamonds are still around 4000. That is a big difference from the ones at zales. Its alot like comparing yugo's and cadillacs, they are both cars, right?

Like i always say, you got a $600 girl, you buy her a $600 ring.

Actually my motto of "you got a $30 head, buy a $30 motorcycle helmet" is the real quote, but I adapt it to many situations.

I would pay attention to cut and clarity. You could buy a big diamond, but get a poor one. I spent about $1800 three years ago on a 1/2 carat diamond and 24k white gold. The clarity was excellent and she says her friends comment on how it sparkles.

You get what you pay for at those stores.  Huge difference in diamond quality and ring quality.

I think the key to engagement ring discussions is the reminder that the cut and clarity of a diamond will not ensure that the marriage will work out. Too many young guys get sucked into something that really isn't all that important. If the girl is all about what her friends will think about the ring or what status that gives her, then go find another girl. It is unfortunate that so much time and money is spent on the wedding day planning and so little time spent on marriage preparations.

Go to Wal-Mart for the ring. Wife picked her set cost $80. Looks real nice and has held up well and we spent the savings on tools and needful things. Neither one of us could figure a way to justify spending mega dollars on a piece of jewelry.

Blooming where I am planted!
Hear, hear!!  I'd rather have a piece of land than a sparkly rock.  In fact, when KSBoy proposed, I had told him I didn't even want a ring at all...but then we ended up picking this out.  I LOVE it and it will be my wedding band too.  Besides, haven't you heard the stories about people's diamonds falling out??  They do all the time!  I have enough to worry about and besides, my lifestyle doesn't mix well with diamonds...gardening, fishing, canning, and cooking...

I agree. The ring is a symbol not a contest. No matter if you get a 4,000 dollat ring or a 100 dollar one, they both mean the same. Getting the high dollar one is like buying the fanciest piece of machinery. All you do is try to impress the neighbors. That is not what buying a ring is all about. Money should never be a factor as it is the symbol of what two people want for life. If a woman expects a big fancy high dollar diamond for the occasion... what does she expect next? Hope that does not make the ladies mad here! But gee, why does a symbol have to have a price tag. If a husband came home and said our neighbor just got a new combine, we need one even though ours does what it can do just fine. What would be the answer? I try and live life simple and to the point. If I have to spend several thousand dollars to prove to a woman that I love her and want to spend the rest of my life with her, then it makes me wonder what does she really want?

Iowa
When I was shopping for my wife's engagement ring (engaged November 2008), I quickly realized that I wanted nothing to do with Kay, Jared, or any other big-box jewelry stores. I found a local jeweler in downtown Ames, IA to do business with. We also purchased our wedding bands there.
