| I agree Chris. Without an organized township, we would get nothing here as far as road upkeep. County policy today is to not maintain any road with less than 3 residences on it. Area residents organized the township I'm in 20 yrs ago or so. We are a relatively poor township as far as finances go because we have tried to keep our taxes down over the years. Since we are a large and relatively young township, our pockets are not as deep as other smaller townships which have been in existence for many decades with fewer miles of road to maintain.
We did levy more taxes last year to play catch-up. Everyone in the township gets a certain amount of gravel for their roads on a per mile of road basis. That is where our township money goes, and for an occassional culvert or something. We hire local truckers to haul our gravel which we either get pit run or crushed at the county bid price. We could hire the county blade at a reduced cost, but we spread the gravel, mow roads, and do snow removal ourselves with our own private equipment without compensation from the township. | |
