Subject: RE: township form of government

central - east central Minnesota -

Skyhawker - 12/1/2010 07:14 Illinois has 102 counties, with elected and appointed "officials" put in place to run their county businesses. Several take office today for the first time. Very few are qualified for the office duties they are assuming. Very prominent in this discussion is the office of sheriff. We hire the city police chief and the city manager, based on some sort of qualifications needed to do the job, but the sheriff is a popularity contest with no prior business nor law enforcement experience required. And the minute the sheriff takes office, he is thinking about what he needs to do or who he needs to do to be re-elected in four years. On another note... What do we need to change to spend our county money more efficiently? How about doing away with the archaic system of township form of government?

Speaking from Minnesota, I'd say get rid of county and state government and keep the archaic system of township government. In MN, the townships are very frugal and run by the residents - no extra spending or more taxes, townships seem to figure out how to provide the services the residents of that township want, very frugally and effeciently. I think you have it backward in your question . . . .
