Subject: RE: Custom hay mowing rate?

Little River, TX
By the hour is the only fair way of charging. Period.

By the acre sounds good but only if the fields are long and narrow.

The equipment cost for each of us is an by the hour cost if you think about it. The more dead head time and time cleaning up corners has a real cost.

I will not go and perform amy harvest proceedures unless paid by the hour, period.

There is one field that initially has 8 corners for one round. Eventually it results in nsumerous long dead head runs. Figure 6 hours to mow, an other 6 hours raking, and a couple hours to bale with a small square baler. Thirty minutes with a rond baler would have done the trick. most of that time would have been dead head time.

The by the acre advocates: those with with an easy field may end up paying more and those with an odd shaped fleld are a charity job for the custom operator.
