Colby, Kansas | the danger in these statistics, commonly used by EWG and others to portray the big evil farms lies in the definitions used in the study. If I recall correctly, an operation with more than $1,000 of gross farm receipts qualified as a "farm". I'm sorry, but I don't think someone grossing $1,200 selling whatever dosen't quite qualify. Heck if you raised one fat steer for the neighbor you would almost qualify.
If the definition of farm more accurately reflected a commercial operation of sufficient size to support its operators in full time employment then the numbers regarding where subsidies go and where food is produced would be much more reflective of reality. That statement is not meant to be derogatory to those who work off-farm in addition to farming, I will likely be in the role myself for many many years. But I also realize that what I do shouldn't be considered a "farm" just because I have over $1,000 gross farm receipts.
