Eastern Washington | Starting with nothing in todays world is not just difficult, it's nearly impossible. Margins are thin and risk is high. I started with Dad in the mid 70's and between the 2 of us we had very little. Over the years we built our business 50/50 into something we were both proud of. After Dad passed, Mom didn't want to be in business anymore so I'm buying her 1/2 out at appraised value. When mom passes her estate will be split 3 ways between my sisters and myself, I'll be paying them. When the time comes one of my son's will take over for me and he will have the opportunity to buy out his brother. (One has always been a farmer the other computer guru hates the farm). Don't worry about the leg up, you'll earn everything you end up with, just try to pay it forward to the next generation.
There are those with the desire to farm, and there are those with the ability to farm, Those with the desire and ability are much more rare.
