Subject: RE: Round Abouts - SIZE matters . . .

central - east central Minnesota -
SIZE matters, and it's not how you use it -  Here's the deal with round abouts - the idea was taken from europe. Over there, in those big open courts - there was no controled traffic as all the roads lead to center city, one point . . . well , they figured lets "control" the traffic and send all the traffic in a circle pattern . . the rest is history. Except for now . . . when Hwy's and interstate freeways were being planned, it was decided to use the minimun amount of land for the "impact" of the roadway. Round abouts (when properlly sized) use up 4 or more times the amount of land as a stop and go intersection . . . . Of couse some engineer must have visited europe and decided to bring that new concept here . . . except, they needed to work within the confines of the exsisting road right-of-ways. I'm supprised the greenies haven't jumped all over this concept, for the waste of land, needed to build these. They used to be very vocal and active when new highways/interstates were being built - with the foot print left on the land with huge expansive interchanges and lanes that scare the earth . . . . Round-abouts scare scar the earth much more then a simple stop & go intersection . . . Im not against them, just size them propertly. Like a shop, storeage shed or grain bin - figure what you need then triple it in size . . . .
