I haven't read much of the replies in this thread, read a few messages from the original poster, and from PW is all.

I think internet bidding is going through a growth phase, where everyone is learning what works, what is ethical, and so forth. What regulations apply.

So....

I really like live auctions. I'm not so fond of the internet stuff, where things are far away, haven't seen them, don't see the other bidders.

That's just me, so you know where I come from. :)

Sorta fraud at auctions is a time honored tradition. Bidding up items happens in live, internet, and any other type of auction. Just how it is, and it's up to the buyer to bid their amount, and take care of themselves. I understand that, and am fine with that. I'm comfortable with the reality of auctions. They are a price-discovery vehicle.

It seems difficult to 'stop' a portion of bidding and put it on hold while waiting for some sort of comformation on credit, while allowing the auction to continue. I understand your rationalization of what you are doing, but it still puts the bidding process in a very grey area - are you accepting that bid or not???? If you are questioning it, then it would seem it is less than a 'real' bid.....

I've never seen that happen at a live auction. "Oh, we got to $10,000 on this item, we need to run a bank check on bidder C, while bidders A & B continue....."

I get the point of running credit checks of some sort. But why would A & B continue bidding, if we are all waiting to find out if C is a serious bidder or not?

There will need to be a better way to deal with this sort of thing as internet auctions continue to develop.

I'm kinda sitting on the sidelines of them, aside from my personal dislike of them at this time, I'm also waiting to figure out the ins & outs of them. A good auctioneer tries to get top dollar for an item. A good bidder tries to get a deal. I got live bidding figured out to my satisfation.

The internet types seem to have all the cards at this time, I feel left out of any sort of control in an internet bid as a bidder....

Not saying anything against anyone in this conversation at all, just one bystander's view of auctions and where they are headed, if it helps anyone. My view can be all wrong, but - it's my perception of things.
