NE Iowa | We have 3 kids - 5th, 7th, and 9th grades. We go to all of their conferences, but it really isn't so we can find out how the teachers say they are doing. They are all excellent students - I don't need a teacher to tell me that. We go to conferences for 2 reasons:
1. Most important is that it shows our kids that they are important to us and how they do in school is important to us. I suspect that if we quit going to conferences, pretty soon we wouldn't look at their homework (that's the teacher's job, right), which would soon be followed by grades going to pot (if Mom and Dad don't care, why should I).
2. It shows the teachers that we care about how our kids are doing. Seems like a good idea to have a clue as to who is teaching your kids, what they are teaching, and for them to know who you are.
In our school, both Junior High and High School conferences are 3-way meetings - student, parent(s), and teacher(s). For Junior High, the student leads the discussions.
