One of it's main purposes is to keep somebody from bidding on their own items, or having a buddy bid on it for them. PW doesn't take reserves, so when it's on there it sells. I bet you've thought about selling something at an auction, and if you couldn't put a reserve on it, then you might have a buddy in the crowd bidding for you. Well, guess what, PW doesn't want that, so that 10% buyer's premium is a way to prevent it.

I've seen settlement sheets on sales at PW, and their commission is well below 10%, but as they've explained on here about 10 dozen times, each auction's commission % is negotiated differently.

Personally, on those items that were sold, the selling price was a lot better than could be done locally.
