My dad helped out at the Ithaca Michigan fire dept when he was a teen. One of his jobs was to tend the stationary boiler that circulated hot water through the engines. When a call came in, they would break the hoses, throw a match in the firebox, hitch up the team and go. By the time they reached the fire there would be enough steam up to run the engine and pump water. | |
