The stalks are red because the sugars that normally would be directed to the ear are concentrated in the stalk tissue. This same phenomenon can happen if you were to pull the ear off at an early stage of development and let the plant continue to mature. Much the same as deer damage. This tells me that something happened pretty early in the ear formation stage.

I remember a lot of talk and/or some theories being thrown around about harming soybeans with gly applications at flowering in the early RR days, but I think time and research has pretty much disproved that. The Monsanto label states applications can be made "up to and beyond soybean flowering" so I don't think a late application would be considered off label.

I'm not a fan at all of late herbicide applications, single trip gly applications, or solely relying on gly (even two trips) and expecting good results. That said, I've been forced to make more than a few rescue treatments late in the game, but I immediately lower my level of expectation for yield.



Edit: Oh yeah, you probably need to invest in a sprayer. It's the only way you are going to get your crops sprayed when you want them sprayed.
