Are you talking about a pure alfalfa stand, or does it have grass - such as orchardgrass or timothy - in it?

You make a valid point regarding the alfalfa being an established cover crop.

If you fall-kill a pure alfalfa stand, the field really gets bare by spring; if it has a fair amount of grass in it, you tend to have a bit more surface residue on it thru spring.
