Subject: fall tillage

north central Iowa
Driving through the country recently I have noticed farmers chisel plowing or deep-ripping their fields at an angle to the existing rows of the harvested crop. It seems to me that this may even add to the number of times they would have to turn around at the edge of the field versus at the end of the field had they plowed with the rows. Why do most, if not all, farmers plow this way. Please enlighten me. Thanks in advance.
