We have a similar situation when conventional land is shifted to organic. When a farmer starts using a 4 or 5 year rotation, manures and compost, and no chemicals, there is a noticable softness in the soil after 3 to 4 years. The inspectors who get on many farms say the big improvement in soil structure comes after 7 to 9 years. Short answer to your question is many years.
