Stanley, Manitoba, Canada | Thanks for the response guys. The beans are cut off just under the ground surface with a knife type cutter that has knives about 3' long. Two rows are put into one small windrow and the the windrower (merger) puts six of those into one. Dutch's explanation was pretty much right on. Our cutter and the pickup on the windrower are both Elmers http://www.elmersmfg.mb.ca/ brand, while the rest of the windrower (merger) was built by a local welding shop a number of years ago.
Front tires on both tractors are single ribs for following the "rips" (as Badger mentioned) we make during planting and in row cultivation.
We replace the unloading auger on the combine with a conveyor for edible bean harvest. A belt conveyor doesn't have the problem of smearing up like the auger does if there are alot of green beans in the sample. For other crops we run with the normal auger.
