Subject: Re: Indiana farm plate laws?

You could call INDOT's state headquarters at Indy & ask but not sure if that will answer the question. When I applied for my permits several years ago after buying our first semi I was told by them that I didn't need a DOT # on the tractor & that in fact it was illegal to put one on a truck that had farm license.

A couple days later a friend was stopped by a local DOT officer & given a warning ticket for not having a DOT# on his semi even though it was farm licensed. Next day another friend went over to get his permits & talked to the same official as I did & was told the same thing. This friend told the official what had happened so the official called the head of INDOT who verified that it was illegal to run DOT # with farm plates but to go ahead & issue a number anyways. They also sent me a DOT #.

Not too different from other state offices I have dealt with. Ask 3 people the same question & you will get 4 answers as one will change their mind before the discussion is ended.
