Subject: help/ tachometer trouble shoting on Concord W Landbardini diesel

just a tish NE of central ND
I have no function of the tachometer on my Lambardini diesel engine needle /dial type Tachometer on the back of the (new to me)2000 concord air cart. I am assuming that this Tachometer shows engine RPMS. The monitor in the cab works properly to my knowlege showing fan RPM's. The lambardini engine has its own electrical generating system. How can a tach like this be checked out ? What are its principles? I believe it has two electrical poles and looks simple. I am asuming it functions on varying voltage or alternating frequency...but there is no ignition coil on a Diesel so it must get its signal from the generating circuts.
Any pionters ot troubl shooting help would be apprecitaed.

Jon Hagen. this sounds like something you might know a little about ?
