Eastern VA. No such thing as too many Magnums. | I wasn't really focusing on the waterwheel since we were doing broccoli. Basically, there is a hole in the wheel under each spike. When the wheel pokes through the plastic, the hole in the wheel empties the water into newly punched hole. It only works on plastic. If it's bare ground, the spike gets all muddied up and huge. Yes, ordinarily the tractor tanks carry 600 gallons of water. (The above tractor isn't used for pepper and tomato and eggplant) There is a electric ball valve to turn off the manifold at the end of the row. It's gravity fed. Sometimes, with a 3 bed planter like this one, down and back is all we can get out of 600 gallons. Here's a pic of the waterwheel up close. Its real simple actually. No water while we punch broccoli holes. You can see it was wet enough under the pivot.
