| Rafe can probably give you a better description, but this is the jist.
if you look in the second pic, on the far left wheel, there is a hose running from the center into the middle of the wheel, that supplies the water, which is held in the wheel by the high sides. each little pyramid has a small hole at the wheel that allows the water to come out when it reaches the bottom of the wheel. in plasticulture the pyramid punches the hole in the plastic and drops in a measured amount of water.

I believe the amount of water in the wheel is controlled by the amount of flow out of the hose. my guys use a tank mounted on the tractor or high up on the transplanter depending upon model http://www.kenncomfg.com/ps414.htm
I believe that model is a gravity flow.
lot of them used up here in tomato and pepper production....
