Subject: RE: How do guys make money buying wheat seed?

Northern Idaho
I am in a major winter wheat growing region and for our operation I figure it will be about $18-20/acre for seed this fall. Considering with current prices an average crop will gross $495/acre that is not much cost for good seed. We plant seed treated with dividend which will raise yields 20 or more bushels an acre many years. I am not sure why you guys plant so much seed an acre, does wheat not tiller as much over there? Here we usually do 80-90lb/a - some late seedings might be 100lb or so an acre (still less than 2bu). One time in the 80s we seeded really early (last week of August) onto summerfallow and put down only 50lb/a of seed and got 107bu/a yield. Only problem with seeding early here is that the big wheat will snowmold easier on a snowy winter.
