 | Most of the time we dont burn down our cover crops. They will die over winter. Every once in awhile we have a few straglers that survive the winter but those are caught by our corn/soy burn down program. I would say that is pretty typical for most of sd. Most all of our mixtures are a lot of brassicas, with some sorghum/sudan, lenthils, austrian winter peas, and common vetch.
Edit: Maybe i read this wrong. Burn down before cover crops would all be small grain stubble, usually just go in with 1 qt round up and then seed. No UAN is applied, sprayed ourselves. total cost per acre 10 or so. Most all of our small grain stubble gets planted to cover crops and if its going back to wheat, we just burn down before wheat planting and fertilizer gets put down with seeder.
