Here is a rundown of corn planted into one of the better soils in Clark County SD. It appears using the figures that the soil should have run out of plant available water about the milk stage. I used a final rooting depth of 3 ft in the calculations. This soil series according to the soil survey has 7.25 inches of plant available water to 36 inches deep. It also says there is an apparent high water table at 3 to 5 ft.

I sampled a core down to 38 inches and appeared to me that was some moisture trough the profile.If i used the figures the soil should have bone dry . So the only two things i can think of that is happening besides my calculations being off is that the roots are going deeper in the profile than the 36 inches or there is a high water table or both.

I saved the core and will dry it in the microwave to determine what the available water is.

I have some pictures of the ear that shows what i think is the plant hasn`t been stressed for moisture.
