Diplodia is a fungus that gets into the ear 21-28 days after pollination. It is typically associated with hot wet conditions during that time. There is nothing to prevent it except crop rotation and that is still no gaurantee. It damages the grain to the point of large docks at the elevators and it makes for a nightmare to store. Its a pain in the neck but it happens.
