northcentral iowa | Each trait is asking the corn plant to make a protein that is foreign to the plant and there is always a cost associated with the production of that protein. The whole concept of traits is very simple. Is the extra burden that the trait costs a corn hybrid larger than the advantage the trait provides to the plant in a given year? IE if it is a CRW trait and you have RW pressure the trait yields better than the conventional sister. If there is no RW pressure the traited version will probably yield less due the energy cost of making that foreign protein. If you have 8 foreign genes, well you get the idea. Should be interesting. | |
