We have changed the stalk roll knives several times on 1063 & 1083 head. The easiest way is to sit the head on it's back. Then you can stand & do the work instead of laying underneath it & having to reach up all the time, not to mention not having all that crap falling on you. They are pretty easy to stand on end, just make a couple angle iron brackets to bolt between a couple row units on the front. Thn from behind reach over with a tractor loader & raise the head & slowly back up. It will pivot on the outer end supports (they are heavy enough & won't bend). Head will sstand on it's back with no support or you can brace it, first time we braced the head but haven't since. Service manager at our CIH dealer told us to do it this way and is how they do it.

Besides being able to stand & ork, having the head on it's back makes bolts a lot easier to get to. As others have said, adjustment of the knives is critical. You want them as close as possible without touching. I believe the book says 3/32" but we adjust as closer than that.

BTW, you don't have to take the snouts off but I would recomend it, especially if they are polly.

Good luck.
