Rolla, ND | There are tons of studies over the years. I would say it's not that there is so much N from the beans, instead it's basically the residue from beans doesn't require lots of N to break down like corn stover would. It's not so much a matter of the soybeans providing N as much as not requiring N.
People have indeed thought for years that soybeans are some sort of donor of N but they really aren't. Low N residue crops are pigs.
So instead of an N credit for soybeans it would be more accurate to think of an N debit for corn.
That would get you to the same place, but the reasoning would better fit what happens.
