South Texas | Not stupid at all, but let me try to explain...
The "drop" used to knock the leaves off doesn't kill the plant. We are in a Texas Boll Weevil Eradication Program that forces you to destroy all stalks, plants, etc. almost immediatly after harvest. As a wood plant, and since it doesn't freeze here, cotton will try to regrow quickly (you only have a limited time to get it harvested while the leaves are off). Therefore, you shred, plow, spray 2-4d, plow again, whatever it takes to make the cotton plant go away. If it rains, the seed left in the field will sprout, and most will be taken out by the fall plowing. However, some does make it until the spring, and all it takes is one rogue plant to kick you out of "compliance" in the eradication program. Stiff fines and even crop leans are involved, just to point out how serious it is.
Hope that was clear as mud! | |
