Subject: RE: GPS voltage buffer

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I have done essentially the same thing on my 8120 with a small garden tractor battery. I used a diode in the line from the tractor to the battery so that the tractor will never draw the new battery down. In essence the GPS and steering is powered by the battery which gets charged by the tractor. This scheme allows me to keep the GPS on over night during planting season to maintain XP Convergence.

We are currently trying to track down a low voltage fault on the wheel position sensor on the 8310. This fault occurred a few times this Spring. The tractor is now hauling hog manure and is showing the fault fairly often.

Both of these tractors are using Trimble's autopilot. The 8120 is using an Insight as the display while the 8310 is using a Trimble 500.

We are in the process of trying to track this down while the steering is less critical. The first thought was to swap out the short cable to the wheel position sensor with the other tractor. I haven't talked to the operator to determine if this has seemed to help.

If the cable swap doesn't seem to solve the problem we will move on to swapping the position sensor and other pieces to try to find the problem. There doesn't seem to be much of a pattern when the fault occurs. Sometimes it occurs while auto steering is engaged other times it occurs while just driving along.

Possibly the electrical system is at fault on this tractor. The charging system seems fine in other respects and there hasn't been a problem starting the tractor or with other electrical functions.

Any other ideas?
