Subject: AVI files won't go from internal HD to portable HD..why?

Chebanse, IL.....

I have a Hitachi portable hard drive (= powered thru USB) that I'm using to receive some of my files from one of my internal HDs so as to free up room on the internal HD. I move lots & lots of files of various sizes, succesfully. However, whenever I try to cut/paste, copy/paste, drag&drop, or whatever method, my .avi (movie) files from the internal HD to the portable HD I keep getting a message saying there isn't enough room on the portable HD for the file & MS suggests DiskCleanup to make room.

Well, there appears to be more than ample room. The portable HD has enough room yet for about 200 gb (200,000,000 kb). This was checked via properties. The .avi files are only about 12,000,000 kb (12 gig), so it seems that they should physically go OK. They're not write-protected and I've tried the same procedure moving an .avi to another INternal HD & the process works just fine. The avi files are not corrupted. I've clicked on them & they play just fine. Also, I've followed MS suggestions & have used DiskCleanup, but it makes no difference & does not help.

So, I know there's plenty of room but MS says not. Anyone have suggestions?

Thanks
