Subject: RE: Found more info on the M-21 till planter

Central Iowa
IH also marketed a strip-till unit in the late 50's and the early 60's. They actually called it a strip till unit.

It consisted of a 4 row front mounted cultivator which was converted to a strip till unit by replacing the front sweeps with disc hillers and a cluster of rotary hoe wheels behind the middle sweep. The cultivator gangs were re-aligned to run on the rows instead of between.

A 4 row planter was pulled behind the tractor to plant in the newly prepared strip.

This system was designed to be used in worked ground and to save a secondary tillage pass.

The M-21 till planter was replaced in the early 60's by the 465 4 row 3pt. unit. The ridge cleaning units were avilable in lieu of the lister units. This unit was available until about 1970.

After that IH became dedicated to offering only equipment that only chopped and buried residue. Then in 1980, IH introduced the 800 planter and "discovered" that the 800 could plant no-till.
