South Central Nebraska | Hey Terry, this year we raised some spring forage peas, spring field peas, and Rockford oats. We are still learning how to grow peas here in South Central Nebraska, but I think it has potential. Our oats look like they will make around 90 bu/acre with decent test weight. Next year we are thinking about trying to raise some common vetch for seed. This fall we are going to plant some cereal rye, triticale, and barley. Might also try some winter oats. This would all be for cover crop resale. It is possible to raise alot of your own seed but you have to be willing to "mess" with lots of crops, and not be afraid to have some failures along the way. The biggest question is knowing what to plant as a cover that will work the best for your operation. There are so many variables that are always changing it is hard to get a handle on what is best. That is why I think the mixes have the most potential, because you can address several variables at once and hopefully have something that improves the bottom line, which is what a cover crop must do to be successful. |
