South Central MN | Iron blight can be almost eliminated with a good guidance hitch such as those that were made by sukup. We've got some organic ground and cultivate it all, except for this year because so far the rain won't let us in. Our neighbor runs RTK on his tractor with a guidance hitch and you don't see a single bare spot in his field. The RTK might be expensive, but we've picked up the guidance hitches for under $500. Well worth the money.
As for combining, we run a Deere flex head and will sometimes pick up a little dirt, but not enough for it to be a problem. Has cultivation really fallen to the wayside so much that people have forgotten that they picked beans after cultivating in the pre-RR days? I don't really think that we leave any more beans behind than anyone else around here because we cultivate. I'm a younger guy and not trying to be a wiseguy, but why are people acting like combining after cultivation requires re-inventing the wheel? We've never rolled our beans because we're going to be cultivating anyways, so maybe we don't know what we're missing when it comes time to harvest. | |
