Little River, TX | Yes alfalfa can be very difficult to kill with Round Up, with out any GMO assistance from Monsanto.
Still there are also instances of coincidences.
In 2007 we were wet. Where the alfalfa did not outright drown it died from wet foot root rot, (PRR).
One field that had out right drowned out, was sprigged into coastal bermudagrass. Guess what there are now random alfalfa plants in the bermudagrass. Another field post 2007 had corn then wheat, and now is fallow. Running sweeps through the fallow ground and saw random alfalfa plants amongst the pig weed and texas panicum.
It is my opinion these random alfalfa plants are not survivors of PRR, &/or drowning, let alone several applications of roundup, plus numerous cultivations, but are from hard seed. In other words alfalfa in this case is simply a weed. A weed that has come up from seed post all the flooding, cultivation and RR applications.
That said I have sprayed alfalfa with Post Plus after using Round Up on another crop, with out properly flushing the system and seen both kill and survival of the alfalfa, for the first 5 feet.
I have also sprayed an alfalfa field with Round Up to Kill the stand and had 25% to 50% of the old crowns survive. (Here in this climate and soil type, along with my sloppy management style!) | |
